  2. Two things. Welcome, sir. We love more converts. And second, you confuse ideology with branding with tactics. The 'left' doesn't really have to stand for anything. It doesn't need an ideology. Because it has a brand. The brand it what you think it is, it's every angry protest, every march every fist shaking demand for whatever, every riot, every punch. And because it's a brand, two things fall out of it - 1) you must adhere to the brand completely, 100% without thought, because that's what brand loyalty is. And 2) this just a means to an end. As President of Turkey Erdogan said "democracy is a streetcar, you take it to where you need then get off". The end's don't justify the means, the ends justify themselves. So arguing point by point on why the left is insane or silly or a basket of hypocrites is largely wasted effort. It's irrelevant. It doesn't matter in the least and no one you're talking to will ever be convinced. They're brand loyal.

  3. The left these days is overwhelmed by progressives that come from an much different place ideologically than liberals. That's why they can so easily tolerate illiberal and authoritarian behavior.

    1. Precisely. And this is why I am constantly admonishing conservatives that their ideological opponents are not liberals but leftists or progressives. One of the saddest things about FB is when you realize that your "liberal" friends actually oppose freedom of speech depending upon just whose speech we are talking about.

    2. Treating science as religion that can determine human morals and behavior will never work. Part of why our culture has excelled in the field of democracy and actual delivery of human rights has nothing to do with science. Many social "scientists" these days exercise their freedoms and push to eliminate these things unless one submits. Do such totalitarian impulses remind you of anything else?

  4. If anything, American liberals are a spur, an outgrowth of the anarchist and communist movements. Not the other way around. The New Left came out of the disaster of the far left in the wake of WW2. They positioned themselves as a 'better alternative' to old left which, after 8 decades had nothing to show for it. After all, who, in the early part of the 20th century met the anarchists, wobblies and communists more than halfway on labor and economic reform? Teddy Roosevelt. a republican. Who threw the socialists into prison? Wilson. The New Left is an expression of surrender and exhaustion. It became a social movement more than political one. By the mid 1960's the left an liberals had pretty stark differences. DP Moynihan was a liberal, and a democrat. He had almost nothing in common with the left. Henry Jackson and Ted Kennedy were liberals with nothing in common with the left. And so on. The left, the old left never went away but it's never been more than childish revolution anger. Black Panthers, SDS, Weather Underground, SLA......this what we see now is the latest turn of that screw. But the liberals, if there are any left who admit they are, have little to do with them.
